Yu Yu Hakusho 7/10

Fun fact, "Yu Yu Hakusho" is one of the classic 90's anime I never watched as a kid, but then later found out about when I was in my 20's. I recently sat down and re-watched the whole series, so I could write a proper review for my blog.

"Yu Yu Hakusho" is a popular shōnen anime series that was adapted from the manga of the same name created by Yoshihiro Togashi. We meet Yusuke Urameshi, a teenage delinquent who unexpectedly dies while saving a child from an oncoming car. After his death, he is given a second chance at life by becoming a "Spirit Detective" and is tasked with protecting the human world from supernatural threats. The plot is a blend of action, supernatural elements, and coming-of-age themes. It's well-paced and keeps viewers engaged throughout its four main arcs, which are distinct in their own right.

One of the series' strengths is the character development. Yusuke, the protagonist, undergoes significant growth from a rebellious and impulsive teenager to a responsible and selfless hero, by the end of anime/manga, he found meaning in his life. The other strength were the many battles. I enjoyed the well-animated fight sequences, featuring a variety of supernatural powers and techniques, they were good enough for its time, although would look quite different if YYH was animated today. I'd like to add, the show's soundtrack is great as well. The humor is hit or miss, but the anime provides plenty of meme material.

The series delves into themes of morality, friendship, sacrifice, and the consequences of one's actions. It explores what it means to be human and the value of life. These themes make "Yu Yu Hakusho" more than just a typical battle shonen anime, as it often raises thought-provoking questions. Togashi took this concept to the next level with his even more successful series "Hunter x Hunter" a few years later.
