"Tengoku Daimakyou" or "Heavenly Delusion" is a captivating anime that blends elements of fantasy, adventure, and mystery into a compelling narrative. Set in an apocalyptic world, the series follows the journey of its protagonists Kiruko and Maru as they navigate through various trials and tribulations.
The story starts without much explanation, we just know a few years ago disaster struck human civilization, and now dangerous man-eating monsters roam around, posing an existential threat to the remaining survivors. Amid this turmoil, an isolated facility shelters children and nurtures them in peace. However, as a few among them find out about the world beyond the narrow periphery of their nursery's walls, their curiosity about it slowly grows. Meanwhile, in the outside world, young survivors Maru and Kiruko band together to search for a special place called Heaven, each for their own reasons. Carrying past burdens and tragic secrets, the two hope to find answers to the cruelty they have experienced in their lives and in the world, which still remains in tatters.
The animation in "Tengoku Daimakyou" is visually stunning, with vibrant colors and fluid movements bringing the fantastical elements of the story to life. From striking landscapes/ruins to intricate character designs, every detail is meticulously crafted, immersing viewers in the world of the anime. Sometimes the scenery and story reminds me of the TV adaption of the game "The Last of Us", I wouldn't be surprised if the game was one of the sci-fi sources the mangaka Masakazu Ishiguro took inspiration from, and the animators from the TV show.
One of the strongest aspects of "Tengoku Daimakyou" is its well-developed characters. Each character is distinct and memorable, with their own motivations and backstories driving the plot forward, yes, even the bad guys. The interactions between characters are dynamic and often poignant, adding depth to the story and enhancing the emotional impact of key moments. Especially the friendship of our main characters is the glue of the show that keeps everything together. You might even say, all the scenes without them are a bit lackluster in comparison.
The plot of "Tengoku Daimakyou" is both thrilling and thought-provoking, filled with twists and turns that keep viewers on the edge of their seats. As the story unfolds, themes of friendship, sacrifice, and redemption are explored, adding layers of complexity to the narrative and giving viewers plenty to ponder long after the credits roll (I had to catch up on the manga because I don't know if there will be a second season). I should mention one scene at the end of the show that involves Kiruko and the old friend she was looking for, and his grave betrayal - that scene might be uncomfortable to watch for some, but it really stuck with me for a long time. It's a cruel world now, imagine a setting where everyone is losing their humanity, it was heartbreaking to watch her go through that kind of assault.
Overall, "Tengoku Daimakyou" is a must-watch for fans of fantasy anime. With its stunning animation, memorable characters, and gripping story, it's an experience that will captivate audiences from start to finish.
