Jujutsu Kaisen 7/10

If you were to mix Naruto, Bleach and Hunter x Hunter, you'd get Jujutsu Kaisen. A fun shōnen manga/anime that perfectly blends dark fantasy, intense action, and intricate character development. I enjoyed the show a lot, but it's not without flaws.

"Jujutsu Kaisen" revolves around the concept of cursed energy and curses—malevolent entities born from the negative emotions of humans. The story follows Yuji Itadori, a high school student who stumbles upon a cursed object, unleashing a powerful curse and altering the course of his life forever. To save his friends and humanity from curses, Yuji joins the Tokyo Jujutsu High, an organization dedicated to eradicating curses and maintaining the balance between the living and the supernatural.

The series is unique enough to stand out in the sea of shōnen manga and anime, but it's also very apparent when the mangaka Gege Akutami is borrowing from other classics, such as Bleach and Hunter x Hunter. And I get it, those series are great, almost all mangaka are inspired or have been influenced by these works one way or another, but while watching the anime, I kept thinking, "Oh, this is exactly the narration/mood HxH uses", or "Wow, the powers are a lot like in Naruto", or "Gojo is an overpowered Urahara and Itadori is like Ichigo", or "cursed spirits are just like hollows"...

That said, I like the main characters! They are strong, compassionate, clever, become good friends, but never forget their mission. The villains are a little less interesting, but at least they got cool powers and the fights turn out really nice. The animation and soundtrack is awesome, no complaints there. Characters like Itadori, Gojo and Megumi Fushiguro bring their charisma to the screen, adding depth and humor to the story. Their interactions are really the best thing about the show. The girls seem to be portrayed weaker than the male counterparts, which always pisses me off in shōnen anime (I mean it's fantasy, why must the rule that guys are stronger still be applied if everything else is bs anyway?). But it's nowhere near as bad as in Naruto. Whether you're a fan of action, dark fantasy, or intricate character development, "Jujutsu Kaisen" is sure to leave you spellbound. Give season 1 a try, then watch the movie, season 2, and then read the manga.
