Air Gear 6/10

"Air Gear" is a fun, high-energy anime that combines the thrill of extreme sports with a touch of the supernatural. The art style, fashion, and music are all great - even more so in the manga. But as usual, after rewatching the show in 2024 - it has not aged that well. The premise of roller skating gangs sounds pretty cool, but is executed rather blandly. Our male protagonist living with hot sisterly female characters and over the top ecchi scenes almost make you chuckle.

The story centers around Itsuki "Ikki" Minami, a young delinquent who discovers the world of Air Treck, a gravity-defying sport where riders use motorized rollerblades to perform daring stunts and races. The world-building in "Air Gear" is impressive, as it introduces viewers to a vibrant subculture centered around the sport. From rival teams and underground battles to secret societies and ancient mysteries, the anime is filled with intriguing elements that add depth to the narrative.

One of the strengths of "Air Gear" lies in its exhilarating and dynamic animation. The series features fast-paced action sequences filled with jaw-dropping aerial maneuvers and intense races that keep viewers on the edge of their seats. The animation effectively captures the sense of speed and freedom associated with Air Treck, making it a visually stunning spectacle.

The characters in "Air Gear" are diverse and memorable, each with their own distinct personalities and motivations. Ikki's journey from a novice rider to a formidable competitor is engaging to follow, and the relationships he forms with his teammates and rivals drive much of the emotional core of the series.

However, "Air Gear" does have its drawbacks. The pacing can be uneven at times, with certain story arcs feeling rushed or underdeveloped. Additionally, the anime diverges from the original manga towards the latter half of the series, leading to some discrepancies in the plot and character development. Depending on whether you like fanservice - you will love or hate this show.

Despite these shortcomings, "Air Gear" remains an entertaining and enjoyable watch for fans of action and sports anime. Its stylish animation, adrenaline-pumping action, and memorable characters make it a standout entry in the genre, sure to leave a lasting impression on viewers.
