There were two shoujo anime in the 90's I couldn't get enough of when I was a kid, one was Sailor Moon and the other the more obscure Wedding Peach. While SM is a beloved classic, WP has been forgotten, so I rewatched it to figure out, whether it holds up as well as the OG magical girl anime or whether people were right for ignoring WP.
"Wedding Peach" is a classic magical girl anime that aired in the mid-90s, known for its blend of romance, action, and friendship themes. The story follows Momoko Hanasaki, who transforms into the heroine "Wedding Peach" to battle demons and save the world from evil forces threatening love and happiness. The funny thing is, she would fight in a wedding dress and her bridal bouquet was her weapon (she also had another more revealing outfit).
The anime's strength does not lie in its character development (there isn't much) but the bonds between the main protagonists: Momoko, Yuri, and Hinagiku. Each girl has her unique personality and struggles, but they unite their powers to fight for justice and protect their loved ones. The romantic elements add depth to the plot, as Momoko navigates her feelings for Yosuke, who is both her classmate and a demon hunter.
The animation style reflects the trends of its time, with vibrant colors and expressive character designs, especially the big doe eyes. While some may find it dated compared to modern anime, it contributes to the nostalgic charm of the series. However, after rewatching it, I can see why the show is mostly forgotten now - it's so clearly a copy of Sailor Moon, so you might as well stick to the original. There are so many better anime of this genre to watch instead. I still enjoyed it for what it is, though. One criticism is that the plot can be formulaic at times, following the typical monster-of-the-week format common in magical girl anime.
Overall, "Wedding Peach" is a delightful anime for fans of magical girl series, offering a balance of action, romance, and friendship wrapped in a nostalgic package.
